Laura Barnes

Hello, I'm Laura, and I specialise in helping couples who feel stuck in a cycle of conflict and doubt rediscover the love and connection they once had. I also help individuals who feel like they have lost themselves in an unhealthy relationship. My approach is informed by my own journey offering a unique and empathetic perspective to my counselling practice.

Growing up in South Africa, I faced significant emotional challenges early on, witnessing my mother’s struggle with depression and my father’s battle with alcohol addiction.

These experiences ignited my passion for supporting others in their mental health journeys. My own path included dealing with emotional neglect because of being in boarding school since the age of six and overcoming significant personal losses, including a divorce and the deaths of close family members.

Through these experiences, I learned to transform my life by applying the principles of psychology not just academically, but personally. One of the most impactful lessons I learned was that of my own Adaptive Child—coping through adaptation and suppression of my true feelings—to embracing the role of a Wise Adult, living authentically and setting healthy boundaries. Since applying this approach and framework to my life, everything started to change for the better and I’ve never looked back.

I bring this wisdom to my counselling practice, tailoring each session to the unique needs of my clients. My goal is to help you understand and meet each other’s needs, moving beyond conflict to build a stronger, more loving relationship. If my story resonates with you, consider this your invitation to reach out and get started on your journey.
